Caballo De Mar (14:25 York — Weatherbys Lonsdale Cup, Group 2, 2m 56y)
A five-year-old bay gelding trained by George Scott and partnered by Oisin Murphy, who has a 50% win rate on him across their two rides together. Caballo De Mar is a dual Group 1 winner who won the Prix du Cadran at ParisLongchamp in October 2025 and then the Prix Vicomtesse Vigier in May 2026 at 12/1, beating Santorini Star by a short head. His Gold Cup run at Ascot in June can be completely ignored — he finished last of eleven beaten 37 lengths, clearly something went amiss that day, and Scott has given him time to recover.
He returns today in a nine-runner Group 2 over 2 miles at York where the good to soft ground suits — a 57% win rate on similar going tells its own story. He has shown his best form at around 14-16 furlongs and drops back to a more suitable trip than the 2m4f Gold Cup test. At 2/1 Murphy’s booking and the market confidence says connections believe the Ascot run is forgiven and forgotten.
Verdict: Back to win — dual Group 1 winner returning from an excusable disaster, suited by today’s trip and ground, Murphy retained. 🏇
