Venetian Lion (17:10 Nottingham — Class 5 Handicap, 1m 75y)

A three-year-old chestnut gelding trained by William Haggas — in solid form at 18% over the last fortnight — and partnered by Tom Marquand, who was on him when he narrowly lost his handicap debut at Southwell last week, beaten just half a length at 10/3. The form is as fresh as it gets and connections clearly believe he should have won that day.

He races off the same mark today, drops into a Class 5 field of just six, and stall 1 at Nottingham carries a significant draw advantage on a track where position matters. Haggas doesn’t run horses twice in a week unless they’re in good shape.

Verdict: Back to win — unlucky not to win last week, same mark, top yard, and Marquand knows him well. 🏇
