The highlight of day two at Goodwood and the race that will define the miling division this summer. Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey and ridden by Billy Loughnane, arrives here unbeaten in five starts — winning the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket in May and then the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, overcoming a poor trip out wide to beat Gstaad by a short head. The same Gstaad, now trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore, lines up again here at 10/3.
The key stat is simple — five starts, five wins, 100% at the distance, 100% at Class 1, 100% on today’s ground. Loughnane has never been beaten on him and Boughey’s confidence in this horse is absolute. He gets an 8lb weight-for-age allowance taking on his elders for the first time, which is a significant advantage in a 12-runner field. Opera Ballo at 4/1 is the danger from the older brigade, but the form book points firmly to one horse.
